Senior Accountant - Accounts Payable, Inventory & Compliance

Overview

The Senior Accountant plays a key role within the Operations Accounting function, responsible for a range of accounting and compliance activities with a primary focus on month-end close, account reconciliations, inventory accounting, and utilities management. This position supports the accuracy of financial reporting in accordance with GAAP and ensures compliance with federal and state regulations, including 1099 reporting. In addition, the Senior Accountant also oversees accounting and reporting for seafood inventory, working closely with Supply Chain team. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead respective month-end close activities, including preparing and reviewing journal entries, reconciling balance sheet accounts, and resolving discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Maintain and reconcile key asset and liability accounts, such as seafood inventory, carpet and fabric, and utility accruals, ensuring accuracy and completeness as part of the period-end close process.
  • Prepare and analyze inventory valuation reports (U.S. and Canada), seafood sales aging, and vendor billing.
  • Partner with Supply Chain and third-party seafood vendors to validate credits, resolve discrepancies, and ensure appropriate approvals.
  • Manage 1099 compliance and reporting, including accurate preparation and submission using third-party software.
  • Oversee TIN validation and Supplier Exception reporting to support daily AP integrity and compliance.
  • Collaborate with Legal and other departments to support research requests, audit documentation, and litigation-related inquiries.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of IRS regulations, recommending policy and procedural updates to ensure continued compliance (including international where applicable).
  • Support external audits by preparing the required documentation and providing explanations for financial transactions as needed.
  • Support the maintenance of accounting controls by partnering with the team to prepare and recommend updates to policies and procedures.
  • Lead communications with external Utility payments consolidator and Utility companies directly to resolve issues and reconcile account discrepancies.
  • Assist with ad hoc projects and provide analytical support to management as required.


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance required
  • Minimum four (4) years of relevant accounting experience, including understanding of accrual accounting, internal controls, and accounting processes and practices.
  • Experience with IRS 1099 Reporting compliance is preferred.
  • Experience with Oracle and Business Intelligence (or equivalent large ERP systems and reporting tools) is a plus.


KEY QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Internal Controls
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel with mastery in advanced functions such as XLOOKUP, SUMIFS, and pivot tables; a proven track record of transforming data into actionable insights
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage high-volume workloads in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to engage effectively across all levels of the organization and with third-party partners
